Google Maps has recently revamped its directions overview layout on Android, providing users with a cleaner and more focused interface. The updated design emphasizes key information, especially the estimated time of arrival (ETA), which now appears larger and bolder in a split, left-aligned format.
This enhancement makes the ETA the focal point of the screen, ensuring that users can easily access vital trip details. In the previous version, details regarding time and distance were cluttered into three tight lines at the bottom of the display.
The information was presented in plain text, often leaving significant empty space below. With the redesign, the layout feels more modern and organized.
Although the distance remains visible, it is secondary to the prominent ETA, which now allows users to also view extra information such as fuel efficiency alongside their anticipated arrival time. Previously, users could gain a quick overview of travel distance and time affected by traffic, but to access additional details—like parking costs or tolls—they had to expand the overview or navigate through menus.
The new layout simplifies this process, making relevant details more accessible. The redesign is available across all modes of transport in version 25.13.06 of Google Maps.
However, as it is implemented server-side, user experiences may vary. While adapting to the new layout might take some time, it is clear that this redesign indicates Google’s intention to enhance user experience.
Overall, the changes are a step forward in improving how users interact with navigation information, though users have no input in the aesthetic choices made by the company.
