Google has made its latest AI model, Gemini 2.5 Pro (Exp), available for free to all users, just a week after its launch. The rollout began on March 29, allowing free users to explore this new technology through web access and Gemini apps for both Android and iOS. Initially, when Gemini 2.5 Pro was revealed on March 25, it was exclusively for Gemini Advanced subscribers, but the company quickly decided to broaden access. The announcement from Google emphasized the importance of making this intelligent model widely available.
They stated, “Gemini 2.5 Pro is taking off,” highlighting their eagerness to share their advancements with more users. While the AI is accessible to everyone, there are still advantages for Gemini Advanced subscribers, including reduced rate limits, expanded access, and a notably larger context window. Currently, Gemini 2.5 Pro supports a one-million-token context window that is expected to double in the near future. Gemini 2.5 Pro has quickly risen to the top of various benchmarks and leaderboards for large language models (LLMs).
Google developed this model by significantly enhancing its base framework, alongside improvements made after training. Despite still being in the experimental phase, the model is equipped with features like support for file uploads, extensions, and Canvas, although some capabilities, such as Deep Research mode, are still lacking. The future availability of a finalized version of Gemini 2.5 Pro for free users remains uncertain. However, given the current trajectory, it’s clear that Google aims to increase user engagement with this advanced AI.
