Android Auto may soon allow users to navigate using smart glasses, based on a recent code discovery. This finding emerged shortly after Google’s TED 2025 tech demonstration, where the company showcased the memory capabilities of its Android XR glasses. A tipster’s analysis of Android Auto code revealed two strings indicating possible smart glasses integration. One string refers to a “Glasses Option,” suggesting a feature in the settings menu.
The other string is more intriguing, stating “Start navigation to launch Glasses.” This indicates that Google might be working on connecting Android Auto’s navigation system to a user’s smart glasses, potentially providing augmented reality (AR) navigation assistance. However, details on how navigational cues would be displayed remain unclear at this point. The discovery was made in version 14.2.151544 of Android Auto.
Given that the feature is still in its early stages, much remains to be clarified regarding its implementation. The timing of this discovery aligns with Google’s recent demonstration, where the XR glasses’ memory capabilities were highlighted. During the demo, the presenter asked for the location of her hotel room key, and the AI promptly provided the answer, showcasing the glasses’ ability to retrieve contextual information seamlessly. Additionally, Google has stated that these glasses will integrate with users’ smartphones to create a lightweight experience, accessing apps without overwhelming the device.
This could mean that the “Glasses Option” in Android Auto may allow smart glasses to pull data from the car’s onboard system rather than relying on maps displayed in their field of view. As Google continues to develop various smart glass models, the potential for an AR-driven navigation system through Android Auto looks promising.
