Google has announced that it will discontinue support for the first and second generations of its Nest Learning Thermostat models. As of October 25, 2025, these older models will no longer receive software updates, and users will lose the ability to control them remotely through Google Assistant. Although the hardware will continue to function as a standard thermostat, smart features will be unavailable. In addition to ceasing support for these models, Google revealed that it will no longer sell any new Nest Learning Thermostats in Europe.
This change coincides with plans to provide discounts for affected users seeking to upgrade to the 4th-generation Nest Learning Thermostat. Google aims to facilitate the transition by offering significant reductions in price, with U.S. customers receiving $130 off, bringing the cost down to $149.99. In Canada, the discount is $160, which lowers the price to $219.99. Despite these changes, Google reassured users that other Nest thermostat models will remain unaffected and will continue to receive security updates.
Additional features for these models, such as the ability to create and modify schedules through the Google Home app, are expected to be introduced later this year. The decision to halt the sale of new Nest Learning Thermostats in Europe stems from the unique heating system requirements present across the region. Google indicated that these factors pose challenges in developing products suitable for the diverse range of homes in Europe. Consequently, the company will no longer introduce new Nest thermostats in the region, although the third-generation Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E will still be available while supplies last.
