Google might soon enhance its Google One backup services by introducing the capability to back up SIM data, particularly focusing on eSIMs. Reports from Android Authority have identified code strings within the beta version of the Google Play Services app, suggesting a potential future update that could simplify the backup and restoration process for Android devices.
Presently, Google One backups cover text message data, but they do not include SIM information. The recent findings point to the inclusion of SIM data as an emerging backup type.
This is notable because it signals that Google is considering ways to incorporate eSIM data into the overall backup process. Additionally, a refreshed settings page for Android device backups has introduced a description of “other device data,” which notably now mentions SIMs alongside contacts, call history, device settings, and messages.
While the current feature is not operational, its introduction could greatly streamline the restoration process for Android users compared to the methods employed by iPhone users. Moreover, although eSIMs are the primary focus, it’s possible that the upcoming feature could also cater to physical SIM cards, especially considering existing tools offered by Apple and Samsung that enable the conversion of physical SIMs to eSIMs.
It is essential to note that as of now, SIM data cannot be backed up via Google One. If this feature becomes available, it would likely require a paid subscription to Google One.
As of now, the timeline for the public release of this tool remains uncertain.
