Google is gearing up for a significant redesign of Android’s user interface with its upcoming Material 3 Expressive update. An early glimpse into this overhaul has revealed changes to the battery status indicator that bear a notable resemblance to iOS.
The company is expected to provide more details about these enhancements during the Google I/O 2025 event. Recent leaks and APK teardowns have provided insights into the new design elements, including a redesigned Clock app and the revamped battery status indicator.
The new indicator features a horizontal battery icon accompanied by large black numerical text displaying the current charge percentage. This design will adapt based on the phone’s charging status, employing a color scheme that is more vibrant than the previous indicator.
Users will see a green icon when charging, a yellow one when battery saver is active, and a red icon for low power. Additionally, a lightning bolt will indicate charging status, while a plus sign signifies the activation of battery saver mode.
The redesign is clearly influenced by Apple’s existing battery status indicators. The horizontal and color-coded battery icons, along with bold percentage text, are similar to those in iOS.
However, Google’s version utilizes black text within the icon, a departure from Apple’s dynamic text color that switches between white and black based on the background. It remains to be seen if Android will adopt a similar feature.
As for the timeline, the exact rollout schedule for the Material 3 Expressive changes is still under wraps. Anticipation is building for Google I/O 2025, where more information regarding this refresh is expected.
