YouTube is introducing a new subscription tier aimed specifically at select users in India, France, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. This initiative allows individuals to share their Premium subscription with one additional person in their household. This innovative move is expected to enhance the accessibility of the otherwise costly Premium service.
The pilot program, reported by MoneyControl, offers the two-person Premium subscription in India for a monthly fee of Rs 219. Additionally, a Music Premium subscription is available at Rs 149 per month during the trial phase. To be eligible, both users must be at least 13 years old, have active Google accounts, and be part of the same Google family group.
However, this sharing option is specifically limited to just two users, not the entire family group. YouTube aims to provide additional flexibility and value through this offering, allowing couples, roommates, or family members to share the subscription at a reduced cost. Instead of paying Rs 298 for two individual subscriptions, users can benefit from this new tier’s price point.
Interestingly, the cost is almost equivalent to YouTube’s Family Plan, which accommodates six users for Rs 299. Over the past two years, YouTube Premium has experienced steady price hikes across various countries, including India, where rates have increased by 12-60%, depending on the specific plan. In a recent earnings call, Alphabet highlighted the significant role of subscriptions in its revenue growth, with YouTube’s advertising contributing $8.93 billion in the first quarter.
While the new tier’s future availability in other regions is uncertain, it appears to be a promising option for those managing multiple streaming service subscriptions. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
