Google Maps is introducing a new feature for iOS users that simplifies the process of saving locations from screenshots. This enhancement, powered by Gemini, allows users to directly capture locations from images rather than manually searching for them. A dedicated “Screenshots” list will appear in the ‘You’ tab within the Google Maps app, where users can easily review and save identified places. For many users who frequently discover new locations through social media or web content, this feature is a significant upgrade.
Instead of needing to navigate through the phone’s gallery to find a screenshot and then opening Google Maps to locate the place, the app now streamlines this process. Users will simply consult the ‘You’ tab in Google Maps to access their new Screenshots list, indicated by a “Try it out” badge. To utilize this new functionality, users must enable Google Maps’ access to their photos. When a screenshot containing location information is taken, the app will recognize it and display a notification prompting users to review the available places.
If they choose to save the identification, the location will be added to their Screenshots list within the app. Additionally, users can add older screenshots to this list as needed. This exciting update is currently being rolled out to iOS devices, with Android support expected to follow soon. Earlier this year, Google showcased this feature, highlighting its AI-driven improvements to enhance user experience with travel suggestions and localized trip ideas.
The integration of Gemini makes it easier than ever to keep track of points of interest directly from captured images.
