The popular read-it-later service Pocket has announced that it will cease operations on July 8, 2025. Users will no longer be able to save articles through the mobile app or web extensions after this shutdown date. The service will enter an export-only mode until October 8, 2025, during which users can export their saved articles.
Following this period, all data will be permanently deleted. Pocket has begun notifying its users through pop-up alerts about the impending shutdown. In a statement, the company expressed gratitude for its user base over the years, stating, “We’ve made the difficult decision to shut down Pocket on July 8, 2025.
Thank you for being part of our journey over the years.” Alongside this announcement, Pocket is not accepting new premium subscriptions and will automatically cancel existing subscriptions, providing refunds to eligible users before the shutdown. Since its acquisition by Mozilla in 2017, Pocket has evolved from a simple read-it-later utility to a platform that offered high-quality content recommendations. The company has received recognition for its contributions, including a Webby Award for “Best of Pocket: 2020” and an Anthem Award in 2023 for supporting local journalism.
However, as user behavior on the web has changed, the company has decided to shift its focus away from Pocket. Despite the shutdown of Pocket, Mozilla is promising notable upgrades and improvements in future offerings. These include a new tab experience and an email newsletter, allowing users to stay connected with the latest content.
Users are encouraged to export their data promptly to avoid losing it when the service is fully terminated.
