The latest beta version of Google Messages is introducing its Expressive redesign to more users, signaling Google’s ongoing efforts to enhance the Android experience. A Reddit user recently highlighted the new Material 3 Expressive design while using a Galaxy Z Fold 6. The changes include a reworked plus icon menu and a newly integrated button group for emojis, GIFs, and other options. This M3 Expressive update features a solid-color background for conversations, effectively separating text from other contact options.
Although the redesign is not yet widely available in the stable version of Google Messages, users of the app’s beta version are starting to notice these changes. Screenshots shared by the Reddit user reveal modifications to the app’s text field menus, particularly for emojis. The new design reorganizes options for Photomoji, Emoji, GIFs, and Stickers into a pill-shaped container, providing a clearer layout. When selected, these options adopt a more vibrant look consistent with the Material 3 Expressive theme.
Additionally, the plus icon options have been adjusted, appearing larger in circular boxes and more spaced out compared to before. The conversation area has also seen a transformation. The texts now feature a solid-colored background, while the text input field is located within a rounded-corner container. This change effectively distinguishes the conversation from standard options like calling and video calling buttons.
Those participating in the Google Messages beta could start seeing these improvements within the week. Overall, the M3 Expressive redesign aligns with Google’s vision from its major Android overhaul announced during I/O 2025, emphasizing aesthetics that enhance user interaction and productivity. Users have already begun experiencing similar updates in other Google apps, like Gmail, which has adopted elements of the new design.
