Meta is reportedly delaying the release of the Quest 4 headset, now looking at 2027 for its potential launch. Instead, the company is focusing on a new, lightweight VR headset termed Puffin, which is expected to be available by 2026.
Puffin is designed to diverge from the traditional all-in-one headset style, featuring a small external processing unit that can conveniently fit into a pocket. The switch in Meta’s VR strategy means that two previous headset concepts—referred to as “Pismo Low” and “Pismo High”—have been scrapped.
Instead of the Quest 4, attention has turned to Puffin, which is said to be powered by Horizon OS and aims to offer a more streamlined and comfortable experience. Puffin’s unique design eliminates the bulk typically associated with VR headsets.
It is expected to resemble a pair of oversized glasses weighing under 100 grams, which would make it significantly lighter than its predecessors. One of the standout features of Puffin is its reliance on hand tracking technology instead of traditional controllers.
While this innovation promotes casual usage and a more intuitive interaction, it may not meet the requirements for serious gaming enthusiasts. In addition to its lightweight design, Puffin is poised to offer a versatile virtual environment, allowing users to create an expansive multi-monitor setup in VR.
This capability aligns Puffin with leading augmented reality glasses, enhancing productivity while also catering to entertainment demands. With the Quest 4 now postponed until at least 2027, all eyes are on Puffin as Meta seeks to redefine the next generation of VR experiences.
