Samsung is expanding the availability of its Sleep Apnea detection feature for the Galaxy Watch, making it accessible to more users worldwide. This innovative health feature, which allows users to detect signs of sleep apnea, has recently received approval in 34 European markets, as well as in Australia and Singapore. The expansion follows earlier approvals from South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and the U.S. FDA, enhancing the watch’s health monitoring capabilities. Sleep apnea is a serious condition that elevates the risk of cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension and heart failure.
To address this, Samsung has integrated software into the Galaxy Watch that can identify potential symptoms of sleep apnea. This feature will be incorporated into the Samsung Health Monitor app, although availability may vary based on country-specific regulatory approvals. Samsung achieved this global rollout following the feature’s attainment of CE marking within the European Economic Area. This marking signifies that the Sleep Apnea feature meets necessary health, safety, and environmental standards set by the European Union.
For users in Australia and Singapore, the feature’s introduction follows compliance with their respective health authorities, ensuring a secured and reliable experience. To utilize the Sleep Apnea feature, consumers must have a Galaxy Watch 4 or newer device running Wear OS 5 or higher. This feature highlights Samsung’s ongoing commitment to enhancing users’ sleep health by leveraging the BioActive Sensor in the watch for monitoring sleep patterns. However, it is not intended for individuals already diagnosed with sleep apnea.
In the U.S., the FDA has approved the feature for adults aged 22 and older, provided they consistently wear the Galaxy Watch during sleep for tracking. This technological advancement reflects Samsung’s dedication to delivering valuable health insights to its users.
