Google has initiated a new testing phase for its AI Mode within its primary app, called “Search Live,” for both Android and iOS users. This feature allows users to interact with an AI in real-time, creating a conversational experience that aims to streamline queries and enhance search results. The rollout of “Search Live” primarily targets users enrolled in Search Labs. Similar to the Gemini Live experience, it features a distinctive interface and activation method through a wavelength icon located beneath the search bar.
Upon initiation, users are greeted with a splash page that highlights the feature’s capabilities. With this, users can engage in a voice conversation with AI Mode to receive tailored and real-time search results. Once activated, users can freely voice their questions, allowing the AI to process and deliver a selection of results in a “scrollable carousel.” This format is consistent with traditional Google Search, where the most relevant answers are prominently displayed, followed by less pertinent options.
Users retain the ability to interact with the results and can ask follow-up questions if they desire further clarification, although the AI may prompt them to specify their inquiries. Some features, such as the “Transcript” button, are not as straightforward as they appear. Tapping this button allows users to text chat with the AI, but it does not provide a written transcript for later reference. The feature enables users to continue conversational queries even when the app is running in the background.
Moreover, Google’s recent I/O 2025 event unveiled significant updates for AI Mode, including integrations with Project Astra and Project Mariner. These enhancements will broaden AI Mode’s capabilities, allowing it to understand web elements better and assist with tasks like retrieving tickets or filling online carts.
