Vivo’s product manager, Han Boxiao, made waves during the recent WWDC by revealing that the upcoming X Fold 5, an Android foldable, will fully support the Apple Watch. This unexpected announcement marks a significant shift in the relationship between Android and Apple devices. Boxiao described the X Fold 5 as an “Apple Partner,” emphasizing its capability to sync health data and notifications, such as calls and texts, from the Apple Watch through the Vivo Health app.
This compatibility means that users with an Apple Watch can transition seamlessly from using an iPhone to the new Vivo foldable without losing functionality. Moreover, Boxiao hinted at additional features that would enhance the user experience, including “extended mode” support for Mac computers. This feature would allow users to utilize the X Fold 5 as a second display, enabling a fluid workspace experience where they can drag windows between devices.
In another intriguing development, Vivo is also incorporating support for Apple’s AirPods into the X Fold 5. This collaboration extends beyond basic functionality and positions Vivo alongside Apple in terms of accessory support. Historically, the integration of Android and iOS devices has faced obstacles.
Although there was a phase where Wear OS, which powers some smartwatches, showed compatibility with iPhones, this has since diminished. In 2024, issues concerning connectivity and interoperability persisted, highlighting the challenges of combining ecosystems. However, Vivo’s innovative stride with the X Fold 5 presents a fresh approach that seems to bridge these gaps effectively.
Interestingly, there were discussions earlier about Apple potentially developing an Android-compatible watch, but that plan was shelved. This leaves Vivo’s current collaboration as a notable exception in the tech landscape, showcasing a willingness to explore interoperability in a traditionally segmented market.
