Google is currently experimenting with a new shortcut for its Chrome browser on desktop, potentially enhancing user access to AI Mode. This shortcut, labeled “@aimode”, aims to provide users with rapid access to the AI Mode’s functionalities for queries. This feature is designed to streamline the experience before directing users to the full Search environment for results, much like the ongoing Gemini integration.
During I/O 2025, Google showcased how AI Mode could transform shopping by providing users with personalized inspiration and product recommendations. The testing of the “@aimode” shortcut for Chrome is reported to be taking place within the browser’s address bar, reflecting a customized version of Gemini 2.5. This shortcut can be located by navigating through Settings to Manage Search Engines and Site Search.
Users can activate AI Mode by pressing the Tab or Spacebar keys when it appears in the dropdown menu, leading to a side-section characterized by the familiar search magnifying glass and AI star icon. Typing a query in this mode allows users to engage with AI functionality, although it will still redirect them to the main Search for results. Meanwhile, a related development for Chrome on Android has been spotted.
A colorful AI Mode icon is appearing in new tabs, which allows users to enter AI Mode directly, bypassing the traditional Search function. Additionally, Google has been refining address bar shortcuts since late 2022, allowing users to search specific categories, like history or bookmarks, more efficiently. The addition of AI capabilities, such as the “@gemini” function, has further enhanced the browsing experience.
While these new features are in the testing phase with no confirmed release date, they signify Google’s push to integrate AI into everyday browsing seamlessly.
