Recent leaks surrounding the upcoming Google Pixel 10 series suggest that Google is working on enhancing the display for the Pixel 10 Pro, potentially improving its comfort levels. However, initial reports indicate that these upgrades may not fully address the concerns of users sensitive to screen flicker. According to a leak from a credible source, Google might enhance the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) dimming rate of the Pixel 10 Pro from its current 240Hz to 480Hz.
This is similar to the upgrade seen in the Galaxy S24 series. However, it appears that the baseline Pixel 10 may not receive the same upgrade, meaning enhancements could be limited to the Pro model. Unfortunately, 480Hz PWM still does not fully meet the flicker standards set by the IEEE, which may leave some users dissatisfied, particularly when other competitors are achieving much higher rates.
There are, however, signs of hope. Back in April, Google indicated that they were addressing the flickering issue and expected to release updates later this year, likely coinciding with the Pixel 10 series launch. Reports suggest that Google could introduce an accessibility feature aimed at users with sensitive eyes, allowing for a more tailored experience.
Competitors have already made strides in this area, with phones implementing settings that help users with flicker sensitivity. If Google can provide similar options, it may preserve the brilliance of its displays while minimizing discomfort for sensitive users. Personally, I hope that the Pixel 10 series will not only boost the baseline PWM rates but also offer additional customizable options to alleviate issues for users like myself, who have been unable to use Pixel devices comfortably due to eye strain and headaches.
We anticipate more information as the expected launch date approaches.
