Threads, the social media platform developed by Meta, is enhancing its features by introducing Direct Messages (DMs) beginning July 1. This update allows users to communicate with their followers and mutual followers directly within the app, eliminating the need to switch between Threads and Instagram for messaging.
Despite Threads being closely associated with Instagram, the latest developments aim to create a distinct user experience. The introduction of DMs is designed to facilitate connections between users who share similar interests, as many choose to follow different accounts on Threads compared to Instagram.
For privacy and safety, the current DM feature will only permit messaging between users aged 18 and over who follow each other or have mutual connections. In addition to one-on-one messaging, Threads is planning to implement Group Messaging soon, enabling users to engage in conversations with multiple people.
Users will also gain enhanced control over their messaging settings, including the ability to filter unread messages. Another notable enhancement is the Highlighter feature, which will spotlight trending topics in yellow.
This function aims to encourage meaningful discussions among users by making it easier to spot what’s current and relevant. Initially appearing in content discovery sections, further enhancements for the Highlighter feature are expected soon.
As Threads approaches its third anniversary, its mission remains focused on empowering communities and fostering fresh perspectives while cultivating a vibrant conversational environment. These new features promise to enhance the user experience, making Threads an even more engaging platform for its users.
