Instagram is set to introduce an immersive 3D experience for its users, thanks to a new test by Meta’s Reality Labs. This innovative feature aims to enhance the way users interact with the platform’s 2D photos, making scrolling feel more lifelike. Currently, this experience will be exclusive to a small group of testers using the Meta Quest VR headset. According to Meta’s announcement, the test utilizes advanced “AI view synthesis algorithms” to transform standard flat images into a 3D format.
This technique adds depth to the photos, allowing users to perceive subtle movements within the images. For instance, viewers may catch a glimpse of a soccer ball flying through the air or an adorable moment captured between two characters. However, only select users will have access to this feature initially, and it may take time for it to become available to all testers. In addition to the Instagram update, Meta is rolling out a new “Navigator” feature for participants in its Public Test Channel.
This revamped interface serves as a centralized hub for accessing apps, games, and settings, allowing users to pin up to 10 applications for quicker access. For those who prefer not to pin apps, the most recently used applications will still be readily visible in the library. While Meta is progressing with its spatial scrolling test on Instagram, Google is also working on its own immersive experiences through Android XR, aimed at integrating augmented reality across its applications. During a recent event, Google showcased not only its ambitions for AR glasses but also demonstrated the capabilities of its AI system, Gemini, emphasizing its potential in everyday scenarios like providing directions or recalling previous interactions.
As these technologies continue to evolve, both companies are aiming to redefine how users engage with digital content.
