Samsung appears to be making significant strides in the foldable phone market, as revealed by a recent patent application. The company has filed a patent with the World Intellectual Property Organization that showcases designs for a quad-fold phone.
This innovative device would feature a bendable display capable of folding four times, utilizing four connected screen panels with multiple hinges for inversion. The patent, titled “Electronic device including a bendable display,” includes graphics illustrating various angles of this multi-fold device, both in its folded and unfolded states.
The design suggests that when it’s fully opened, the phone would offer a large, tablet-like screen, while maintaining a compact form factor when folded, making it easy to carry. This proposed device could provide enhanced functionality compared to existing tri-fold phones, with each panel folding inward rather than just one, maximizing screen real estate.
At the recent Mobile World Congress, Samsung showcased prototypes of multi-fold screens, hinting at their future capabilities. Designs like the Flex G and Flex S have sparked interest, as they highlight the innovative folding mechanisms that Samsung is exploring.
Furthermore, the company reportedly plans to launch its upcoming Galaxy G Fold alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7 later this year, with production set to begin soon. While patents do not guarantee that these concepts will enter the market, they indicate that Samsung is laying a solid foundation for its foldable phone technology.
As the company continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in mobile devices, it will be intriguing to see how these designs translate into practical products.
