Qualcomm has unveiled its latest mobile platform, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, which aims to enhance performance and accessibility for mid-range flagship smartphones. This new chip features advancements over the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, including a Kryo CPU and a redesigned Qualcomm Adreno GPU architecture.
With a remarkable peak speed of 3.2 GHz, it promises a 31% boost in CPU performance and 39% better power efficiency. The Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 is particularly focused on optimizing gaming performance.
It introduces Kryo cores, varying from the Oryon architecture used in the Snapdragon 8 Elite, and is designed with a core configuration of 1+3+2+2, surpassing its predecessor. The upgraded Adreno 825 GPU significantly enhances performance by 49%, facilitating real-time ray tracing and global illumination for superior lighting and graphics in games.
Additionally, substantial improvements have been made to the chip’s Neural Processing Unit (NPU). The Qualcomm AI Engine reportedly boosts AI capabilities by 44%, allowing for smoother processing of multi-modal Gen AI models similar to ChatGPT.
This enhanced NPU supports up to a 320 MP camera sensor, up from the 200 MP limit of the previous generation, enabling better object recognition and photography in various lighting conditions, including improved performance for nighttime scenes. The Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 also features Snapdragon Sound Technology for premium audio experiences and connectivity options that include the robust Snapdragon 5G modem and support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.
